Forrest, W. W. (University of Adelaide, Adelaide, South Australia). Adenosine triphosphate pool during the growth cycle in Streptococcus faecalis. J. Bacteriol. 90:1013-1018. 1965.-The adenosine triphosphate (ATP) pool has been studied throughout the growth cycle of Streptococcus faecalis. Normally, the pool is quantitatively related to the concentration of organisms and the growth rate, but deviations from these relationships can occur without affecting the growth rate of the organisms. A critical concentration of ATP seems necessary for exponential growth, and, at lower levels, only linear growth can occur. If no growth can take place, catabolism of added energy source gives rise to a large increase in the pool level. The pool level represents the balance between the demands of the organisms for energy and the supply of energy derived from catabolism of the substrate.

Energies of activation and uncoupled growth in Streptococcus faecalis and Zymomonas mobilis.
Growing cultures of Streptococcus faecalis at temperatures above 30 C have activation energies for both rates of growth and glycolysis of 10.3 kcal mole(-1), and a constant growth yield; when growth takes place below this temperature, the growth yield decreases and the activation energy for growth increases to 21.1 kcal mole(-1), but the activation energy for glycolysis is unchanged. The adenos...
متن کاملMolar growth yields of certain lactic acid bacteria as influenced by autolysis.
Molar growth yields determined from batch cultures of Streptococcus diacetilactis and S. faecalis were appreciably greater at the peaks of maximal growth than after continued incubation and considerable autolysis. The higher molar growth yields were about equal to those determined in a continuous culture. Autolysis during logarithmic growth was minimal. The average Y value for adenosine triphos...

Goddard, J. L. (University of Oklahoma School of Medicine, Oklahoma City), and J. R. Sokatch. 2-Ketogluconate fermentation by Streptococcus faecalis. J. Bacteriol. 87:844-851. 1964.-Streptococcus faecalis 10Cl did not grow with 2-ketogluconate alone as an energy source, but did grow when gluconate was added. More growth was obtained than could be accounted for by the gluconate alone. The requir...
متن کاملCharacterization of three lactic acid bacteria and their isogenic ldh deletion mutants shows optimization for YATP (cell mass produced per mole of ATP) at their physiological pHs.
Several lactic acid bacteria use homolactic acid fermentation for generation of ATP. Here we studied the role of the lactate dehydrogenase enzyme on the general physiology of the three homolactic acid bacteria Lactococcus lactis, Enterococcus faecalis, and Streptococcus pyogenes. Of note, deletion of the ldh genes hardly affected the growth rate in chemically defined medium under microaerophili...
متن کاملMembrane Adenosine Triphosphatase from Streptococcus faecalis
The membrane adenosine triphosphatase from SfrepfoCOCCUS faecalis has been purified by heat treatment, gel filtration through Agarose, and repeated chromatography on diethylaminoethyl cellulose. The purified ATPase appears to be homogeneous as judged from gel electrophoresis and sedimentation velocity studies. Sedimentation equilibrium studies, which are presented in the succeeding paper, also ...
